Bioremediation has many useful techniques, most of which are recent, but some of which have been around for thousands of years. Recently, many techniques of Bioremediation have been developed to clean up the environment. One of these techniques is called Biostimulation. Biostimulation is the process of adding various substances such as carbon or nitrogen to soil to help promote bacteria which help biodegrade various contaminates. Biostimulation is often the precursor to most Bioremediation projects, and is very helpful in promoting the Biodegredation of various contaminates. One bioremediation technique used to clean up the environment is called Bioventing. Bioventing is the process turning over contaminated soil to expose microorganisms in the soil to oxygen to increase the rate of biodegredation. Bioremediation is also used to dispose of various harmful materials through the process of Landfarming. During the process of Landfarming, contaminates are added to topsoil and tilled to allow the microbes in the healthy soil to cleanse contaminated soil and dispose of harmful materials. One Bioremediation technique that is not recent, however, is composting, which uses fungi and bacteria to biodegrade organic material. Substances such as vegetation, manure, or soil are placed in a container or pile where bacteria and fungi reach optimal temperature to break down the various substances. The end result is nutrient enriched soil which can be used as fertalizer or topsoil.
